It’s bar/bat mitzvah season! Now what?
Breathe in. Breathe out. Repeat.
Be nervous, but don’t be too nervous. Students who appear calm, confident and happy perform best at their bar/bat mitzvah ceremonies.
Know thy material.
Practice, practice, practice! If students or parents have questions, they should be sure to ask their teacher. Students: This process is about learning — not about doing as many Torah readings as your older sister did. Make sure you’re 100 percent comfortable with your materials at least two weeks before the service so you can use that time to rehearse everything from the Bimah.
Use your resources.
Students, everybody can help you practice. Use this Web site as a starting point for help with learning the services, preparing documents for guests and learning study tips. But beyond this site and beyond your tutor, your friends and family can be a great help — even if they don’t know Hebrew. Ask them to listen to you practice and see if they can offer any advice about the way you speak or how you stand. Maybe they remember something great from a previous bar/bat mitzvah they attended.
